BIO

 

Prof. David Bastidas is core faculty member and corrosion expert at the National Center for Education and Research on Corrosion & Materials Performance, NCERCAMP-UA (Akron, OH, United States). Currently, his scientific research activity is focused on Metallic Materials Corrosion and its Inhibition. He leads the research line in Corrosion Protection and Materials Performance. Prof. D.M. Bastidas gained his PhD in Material Science and Engineering as well as his BSc in Chemical Science at the Univ. of Barcelona (Spain). Distinguished with Top Researchers for 2020 by The Ranking of The World’s Top Contributors to their fields of Science.

 

Prof David Bastidas is the Trustee of The University of Akron AMPP Section, and Faculty Advisor of Corrosion Squad Student Association. Prof. D.M. Bastidas is the inaugural winner of the new ECS Corrosion Division Rusty Award for Mid-Career Excellence 2022, also he has been awarded the National Corrosion Award of Excellence in 2020 for his research and teaching achievements. In addition, Prof. D.M. Bastidas has been awarded the Outstanding Campus Advisor Award and Outstanding Faculty Engagement Award in 2022.

Chris Graber has 24-years of experience in the paint and coatings industry.  Upon graduating from Indiana University with B.A. Chemistry and Minor in Biology, Chris started his professional career with Valspar and Sherwin-Williams as Formulation Chemist in General Industrial Coatings and Architectural Paint respectively.   After 7-yrs as Formulation Chemist, and upon earning his M.B.A. from Case Western Reserve University, Chris transitioned into technical sales, where he has been servicing the paint and coatings marketplace for the past 17-yrs.  In his various technical roles, Chris has served as Product Group Manager, Key Account Manager and Sales Manager and is currently the Technical Sales Manager and Lab Manager for J.M. Huber’s Performance Minerals Division. 

 

Abstract:  

Chris Graber will review the physical and performance benefits that can be realized in coatings when you formulate with an ultra-pure and ultra-fine calcium carbonate.  Chris will review lab data which highlights the benefits of using calcium carbonate to reduce titanium dioxide and will give guidance on how much can be used to reduce bill of material cost without adversely impacting paint properties.  Consequently, the technical paper title is “Formulating with an ultra-pure CaCO3 and its value proposition when used as TiO2 reducer”.

Super-Intumescent Coatings for Prolonged fire protection of Cardboard and Wood

Gary Wnek is the Joseph F. Toot, Jr., Professor of Engineering and Professor and Chair of Macromolecular Science and Engineering at Case Western Reserve University.  Gary’s research interests include fibrous polymers and gels for applications in drug delivery and regenerative medicine, synthetic macromolecular constructs that mimic physiological functions, processing of polymer multi-layer and polymer fiber/matrix composites, and flammability mitigation of common polymers. He has authored or co-authored over 200 publications and holds 37 US patents.  Gary earned his Ph.D. In Polymer Science and Engineering at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in 1980, and his B.S. Degree in Chemical Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1977. 

Abstract

 

Two major trends are in opposition, namely an increasing usage of polymeric materials in packaging and home construction and increasing government restrictions on the usage of common fire retardants. The latter include halogenated organics, long known for their efficacy but now under scrutiny regarding toxicity. New approaches are urgently needed to address the need for fire suppression formulations, either as additives or coatings, which are environmentally acceptable and sustainable. Toward that end, our laboratory has given increasing attention to intumescent coatings that can promote a significant delay of combustion of, for example, cardboard and wood.  The presentation will commence with a brief story about the initial inspiration for our work (Lake Erie algae), followed by efforts to (1) retard the combustion of open-cell urethane upholstery foam using sol-gel silica deposition, (2) replace boric acid in intumescent coatings, and (3) develop unique formulations exhibiting 'super-intumescence' for extended fire protection of cardboard, wood and plastics.  Fundamental insights will be shared along with opportunities for further improvements, including replacement of melamine as a gas generator.
